BJP Slams Mamata Banerjee Over ED Raids, Alleges Police Misuse in West Bengal

Kolkata: The BJP Mamata Banerjee ED raids controversy escalated on Sunday as the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her alleged intervention during Enforcement Directorate searches at the Kolkata office of political consultancy firm I-PAC. The BJP accused the Chief Minister of overstepping constitutional boundaries and undermining the functioning of central investigative agencies.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned the propriety of the Chief Minister’s actions and raised concerns about the state of law and order in West Bengal.

BJP Mamata Banerjee ED Raids: Questions Over CM’s Visit

Ravi Shankar Prasad expressed surprise over Mamata Banerjee’s decision to visit the I-PAC office during the ED operation, pointing out that the premises do not belong to the Trinamool Congress nor serve as the residence of any party functionary. He questioned under what authority the Chief Minister intervened during an ongoing probe by a central agency.

The BJP leader said such actions raise serious concerns about political interference in investigations and set a dangerous precedent that could weaken institutional independence.

Alleged Attack on Suvendu Adhikari’s Convoy

The BJP also alleged that the convoy of Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, was attacked a day earlier in the presence of police personnel. Prasad claimed that despite attempts to lodge a formal complaint, no First Information Report was registered.

He described the incident as deeply troubling and said it reflects the deteriorating state of democratic norms in the state. According to him, failure to act on such incidents erodes public trust in law enforcement agencies.

BJP Alleges Systemic Misuse of Police Machinery

The BJP Mamata Banerjee ED raids issue, Prasad said, is part of a larger pattern where the West Bengal police are allegedly being used as a political tool. He accused the state government of turning the police system into an instrument for unconstitutional and undemocratic activities, rather than upholding the rule of law.

The BJP leader warned that continued misuse of law enforcement agencies for political purposes could have serious consequences for democracy and federal principles. He urged constitutional authorities to take note of the developments and ensure that investigative agencies are allowed to function independently and without intimidation.
