Bhubaneswar: The sacred Rukuna Rath Yatra 2026 has begun today in Bhubaneswar, marking one of Odisha’s most revered festivals on the occasion of Ashokastami. Lord Lingaraj, the presiding deity of Ekamra Kshetra, will embark on his annual chariot journey, drawing massive crowds of devotees from across the state.

The grand procession is not just a religious ritual but a deeply emotional moment for devotees who gather to witness the divine journey believed to cleanse sins.

Grand Rituals and Timings of Rukuna Rath Yatra 2026

The day’s rituals follow a strict traditional schedule.

The Pahandi ritual, where Lord Lingaraj is ceremonially brought out of the temple, is set for 10:45 AM. After completing sacred offerings, including the ritual meal of moong dal and anna, the deity ascends the chariot.

The pulling of the chariot will begin at 2:30 PM, only after receiving the divine permission known as Agyanmala.

Lord Lingaraj is accompanied by Goddess Rukmini and Lord Vasudev, making the procession even more significant. The chariot will move towards the Rameshwar Temple, led by traditional servitors.

Spiritual Significance of Rukuna Rath Yatra

Also known as Papa Binashi Yatra, the festival holds deep spiritual meaning.

Devotees believe that witnessing Lord Lingaraj on the chariot helps cleanse past sins and grants spiritual liberation. The streets of Bhubaneswar echo with chants, drum beats, and devotional songs as thousands gather for darshan.

The return journey of the chariot will take place on March 30, completing the multi-day celebration.

Mythological Origins Behind the Festival

The Rukuna Rath Yatra is rooted in ancient legends from the Ekamra Purana.

One legend connects the festival to Lord Ram, who worshipped Lord Shiva here to atone for killing Ravana. Another tale speaks of Lord Shiva defeating the demon Tripurasura using the divine Rukuna chariot, symbolizing victory of good over evil.

These stories continue to shape the rituals and beliefs associated with the festival.

Rituals That Define the Festival

The festival is marked by unique traditions passed down through generations.

Lord Lingaraj is accompanied by Maa Bhubaneswari, symbolizing divine शक्ति. The chariot is ceremonially pulled by thousands of devotees, reflecting collective faith and devotion.

The chariot halts near Rameshwar Temple, where rituals continue for four days before the deity returns to the Lingaraj Temple on the fifth day.

Massive Crowd and Security Arrangements

Authorities have made extensive arrangements to manage the large turnout expected during the festival.

Lakhs of devotees are likely to gather in Bhubaneswar, with police and administration ensuring smooth movement, safety, and crowd control.

The Rukuna Rath Yatra remains one of Odisha’s most iconic cultural and religious events, blending devotion, tradition, and community participation into a grand spiritual spectacle.
