- The campaign will focus on soil health, balanced fertiliser use, water conservation and natural farming.
- Farmers will receive direct support through government schemes and village-level outreach programmes.
New Delhi: The Khet Bachao Abhiyan is set to begin across India on June 1, with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launching the initiative from Raisen. The month-long campaign will run until June 30 and seeks to address some of the most pressing challenges facing Indian agriculture, including declining soil health, excessive chemical use and the growing impact of climate change.
The initiative aims to take agricultural awareness directly to villages through coordinated efforts involving state governments, scientists, agricultural institutions and local representatives.
Khet Bachao Abhiyan Focuses on Soil Health and Climate Resilience
Chouhan said Indian agriculture is confronting multiple threats, including rising temperatures, deteriorating soil quality and the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
The campaign’s central objective is to encourage farmers to adopt practices that improve long-term farm productivity while reducing environmental stress. Officials believe that healthier soils and better resource management can help farmers withstand increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
Awareness drives will be conducted at the grassroots level, with experts visiting villages to provide practical guidance tailored to local agricultural conditions.
What Farmers Can Expect Under Khet Bachao Abhiyan
The nationwide outreach programme will educate farmers on several key areas:
- Balanced fertiliser application and scientific soil testing
- Soil Health Card utilisation
- Natural and sustainable farming techniques
- Crop planning based on local conditions
- Water conservation measures
- Green manuring practices
- Identification of counterfeit fertilisers, seeds and pesticides
The campaign will also focus on ensuring that farmers receive information about government programmes designed to improve productivity and financial security.
Khet Bachao Abhiyan to Strengthen Centre-State Agricultural Coordination
A major feature of the campaign is its emphasis on collaboration. Chouhan has spoken with chief ministers across the country and urged active participation from state governments, agricultural universities, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), research institutions and farmer organisations.
He has directed officials to prepare a detailed village-wise roadmap identifying which officers, scientists or teams will visit specific villages and on what dates. A dashboard-based monitoring system will be used to track progress and ensure accountability.
The minister stressed that the campaign can succeed only through coordinated action involving governments, researchers, public representatives and farming communities.
Government Schemes to Reach Farmers Directly
Beyond awareness generation, the campaign will also help farmers access benefits available under major agricultural programmes.
These include:
- Kisan Credit Card
- PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi
- Crop Insurance Scheme
- Soil Health Cards
- Mini Seed Kits
- Pulses and Oilseeds Mission
- Agricultural Mechanisation Programmes
By combining awareness, field-level engagement and direct delivery of scheme benefits, the government aims to improve both productivity and farm incomes.
Minister to Visit Villages During Campaign
Chouhan announced that he will personally travel to villages across different states during the campaign to interact directly with farmers and assess implementation on the ground.
The broader goal extends beyond a single month-long initiative. Officials view Khet Bachao Abhiyan as an effort to build a nationwide movement around sustainable agriculture, encouraging farmers to protect soil resources, adopt climate-resilient practices and secure the future of Indian farming for the next generation.
