Bengaluru: The kitchen of Skyye Lounge at Bengaluru’s UB City was shut after Karnataka food safety officials found 45 kg of rotten meat, mouldy food and expired dairy products during a surprise inspection on Sunday.

The action was part of a wider food safety drive across Bengaluru, during which officials inspected five establishments and seized or discarded 132 kg of food articles and 15 litres of used cooking oil.

Rotten Meat, Expired Dairy Found at Skyye Lounge

Officials from the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) said the 16th-floor rooftop restaurant had serious hygiene and food storage violations.

During the inspection, officials found:

45 kg of rotten meat
6 kg of rotten vegetable cutlets
15 litres of used cooking oil
Expired milk and curds
Food items considered unfit for consumption

Officials said some of the meat had developed fungus, while the milk and curds had reportedly expired around 10 days earlier.

The seized and discarded food items were destroyed in accordance with the prescribed procedure.

Food Safety Checks Expanded Across Bengaluru

The inspection at Skyye was part of a special enforcement drive conducted by the FSDA along with civic authorities.

Officials also inspected Royal Chain Hotel, Madras Kitchen, Tescon Hotel and Sanchez Hotel.

The inspections focused on food storage conditions, kitchen hygiene, expiry dates and compliance with food safety requirements.

More Food Items Seized From Restaurants

Authorities reported several other violations during Sunday’s inspections.

At Royal Chain Hotel, officials seized 50 kg of duck and 5 kg of fish.

Madras Kitchen was found storing 5 kg of green peas, while 5 kg of mushrooms were seized from Tescon Hotel.

At Sanchez Hotel, officials seized 3 kg of fish, while 7 kg of cake, potatoes and tacos were discarded.

Officials also alleged that some establishments attempted to conceal manufacturing and expiry dates during inspections.

Notices Issued to Food Businesses

Authorities have issued notices to establishments found violating food safety norms.

Samples of expired food materials have been sent to laboratories for further testing, while most of the seized products were destroyed.

Officials also reported instances of meat being stored for unusually long periods. In one establishment, meat had reportedly remained in cold storage for more than six months, while fish at another restaurant had allegedly been stored for more than a year.

Bengaluru Restaurants Face Continued Food Safety Scrutiny

The latest action follows another FSDA crackdown on August 7, when officials seized and destroyed meat, vegetables, fish, bakery products and milk from several prominent hotels in Bengaluru.
