KOLKATA: Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that her car came under attack during protests in Halisahar, North 24 Parganas, on Sunday. She claimed stones and bricks were thrown at her vehicle while she was travelling to meet the family of Trinamool Congress worker Birju Keot, who allegedly died in police custody.
The incident has triggered a fresh political confrontation in West Bengal, with the Trinamool Congress accusing the police of failing to provide adequate security and the BJP denying any involvement.
Mamata Banerjee Alleges Attack on Convoy
According to Banerjee, protesters surrounded her vehicle, smeared it with mud and allegedly threw shoes, water bottles and stones.
Slogans including “Chor bhagao” were also reportedly raised as police attempted to clear the route.
Speaking to reporters, Banerjee said the incident could have had serious consequences if the vehicle’s windows had been open.
She alleged that people from outside the area threw stones at her car in front of police personnel and claimed that she could have suffered serious injuries.
BJP Condemns Incident, Denies Role
BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya condemned the alleged attack and called for the identification and prosecution of those responsible.
However, he denied any involvement by the BJP and urged the police to investigate the incident and take appropriate action.
The opposing claims have further intensified the political tension surrounding the incident.
Mamata Visits Family of TMC Worker Who Died in Custody
Banerjee had travelled to North 24 Parganas to meet the family of Birju Keot, a TMC worker who allegedly died while in police custody.
Keot had been arrested on an extortion charge and was sent to five days of police custody by a court last Friday.
His wife, Jenny Sharma, a former Kanchrapara municipal councillor, has alleged that Keot was tortured and beaten while in custody. Police have yet to respond to the allegations of custodial torture and death.
TMC Leaders Question Police Action
Trinamool leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Dola Sen, who accompanied Mamata Banerjee, also criticised the administration over the security arrangements.
TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee alleged that Keot had been detained even though his name was not included in the FIR.
The latest confrontation has added to the political tension in West Bengal, with the TMC and BJP trading allegations over the alleged attack, police security and the circumstances surrounding Keot’s death.
