- ChatGPT for Teens is designed for users aged 13 to 17, with additional protections applied to sensitive content.
- Study Mode, homework guidance, quizzes and interactive learning tools are designed to encourage understanding instead of shortcut answers.
- Parents can link accounts, set Quiet Hours and manage selected features, while limited safety notifications are available in high-risk situations.
New Delhi: OpenAI is expanding its approach to younger users with ChatGPT for Teens, an age-appropriate experience aimed at helping teenagers use artificial intelligence for learning while adding stronger safety protections.
The teen experience is designed for users between 13 and 17. OpenAI says age-related signals can be used to determine whether an account should receive the teen experience, while users who are incorrectly identified as under 18 can verify their age.
The move reflects a broader shift in how AI companies are approaching teenage users. Instead of simply restricting access, OpenAI is combining content safeguards with tools intended to promote critical thinking, structured learning and healthier technology habits.
ChatGPT for Teens Focuses on Learning and Safety
The new experience places additional safeguards around areas that can pose particular risks for teenagers, including graphic violence, dangerous challenges, sexual or violent roleplay and content associated with extreme beauty standards or unhealthy dieting.
OpenAI has also expanded learning-focused features. Study Mode is designed to guide students through problems using questions, structured explanations and step-by-step reasoning rather than immediately providing an answer. The company says the feature was developed with teachers, learning scientists and pedagogy experts.
The wider learning experience includes tools for creating study guides, flashcards and practice questions, as well as interactive experiences designed to help students engage directly with academic concepts.
ChatGPT for Teens Adds Parental Controls
Parents and guardians can link their accounts with a teen’s ChatGPT account and manage selected settings. Available controls include Quiet Hours, voice access, memory, image generation and model-training preferences.
Parents can also enable Study Mode from Parental Controls. When enabled, it becomes the default for new chats started by the teen, giving families another way to encourage a study-focused use of ChatGPT.
OpenAI says parental controls do not provide parents with access to their teen’s conversations. In limited high-risk situations, however, the company may send safety notifications to a linked parent or guardian.
ChatGPT for Teens Promotes More Responsible AI Use
OpenAI is also encouraging teenagers to develop healthier habits around AI use. Break reminders are designed to encourage users to step away during extended sessions, while parents can establish periods when ChatGPT cannot be used through Quiet Hours.
The company has also published resources for families, including guides explaining how AI works, why ChatGPT can make mistakes and how parents can encourage teenagers to verify important information rather than accepting AI responses automatically.
The broader strategy is significant because teenagers are becoming regular users of AI for schoolwork, research and productivity. OpenAI says nearly nine in ten teens using ChatGPT use it for learning, information, skill-building or productivity during a typical week.
The challenge for AI platforms is therefore no longer simply whether teenagers should have access to these tools. It is how that access can be structured so that AI supports learning without replacing independent thinking, while giving families meaningful safeguards.
OpenAI’s teen-focused approach combines those two goals, offering teenagers more age-appropriate access while giving parents additional tools to establish boundaries around how ChatGPT is used.
