Hindol: A Dhenkanal elephant attack has left a 55-year-old man died of a heart attack in Kumurusinga village under the Hindol forest range after seeing an elephant in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Purnachandra Dehuri, son of Pranabandhu Dehury. According to the villagers, he came outside his house after hearing noise about an elephant moving through the village.

Dhenkanal Elephant Attack Triggers Panic in Village

According to villagers, the elephant entered Kumurusinga at around 1 am and moved along a village road.

After hearing the commotion, Purnachandra reportedly opened the door of his house and stepped outside. The elephant was nearby, and the situation quickly turned dangerous.

Family members immediately took him by ambulance to Hindol Sub-Divisional Hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead.

Dhenkanal Elephant Attack Raises Human-Elephant Conflict Concerns

The incident has caused deep distress in the village, particularly because Purnachandra was reportedly the family’s main earning member.

He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter and his 90-year-old father. His death has left the family facing both an emotional loss and the immediate challenge of managing household responsibilities.

The incident also highlights the continuing risks faced by communities living close to forest areas in Odisha, where elephants can enter human settlements in search of food or while moving between forest habitats.

Forest Officials Monitor Elephant Movement

Following the incident, forest department personnel reached the area and began monitoring the elephant’s movement. The incident has left his family and villagers shocked, while forest officials and police have begun monitoring the situation.

The immediate priority is to prevent another encounter between the animal and local residents. Police are also conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Residents have been urged to remain cautious, particularly during night hours when elephant movement can be difficult to predict.

The incident is likely to renew attention on the need for rapid alerts, coordinated forest and police response and greater awareness among villages located near elephant corridors. For the affected family, however, the immediate concern is coping with the sudden death of the household’s primary income earner.
