BHUBANESWAR: Odisha is facing another period of intense monsoon activity, with the Odisha heavy rainfall warning raising concerns over flooding, waterlogging and disruption in several parts of the state.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red warning for five districts, while orange and yellow alerts cover several other areas. Continuous rainfall has already affected normal life in southern Odisha, particularly Gajapati and Koraput.
Low-lying areas have been inundated, standing crops damaged and road communication disrupted in vulnerable locations.
Odisha Heavy Rainfall Warning Covers Five Districts
The red warning, valid until this morning, covers Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur.
Orange warnings have been issued for 18 districts, while several other districts remain under yellow warning.
The combination of heavy rainfall and already saturated ground conditions increases the possibility of waterlogging and localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
Odisha Heavy Rainfall Warning Disrupts Gajapati and Koraput
Gajapati and Koraput have reported significant disruption following persistent rainfall.
Several low-lying areas have been inundated, while some communities remain cut off or face difficulties accessing essential services. Standing crops have also suffered damage due to accumulated rainwater.
Road connectivity has been affected at several locations, creating additional challenges for residents and emergency response teams.
The continuing rainfall could worsen the situation if intense showers persist, particularly in areas where drainage systems are already under pressure.
Odisha Flood Situation Prompts School Closures
The rainfall has also prompted precautionary measures in northern and coastal Odisha.
All schools and Anganwadi centres in Nabarangpur have been closed today. Several schools in Bhadrak and Jajpur districts have also remained closed as authorities assess the weather conditions.
District administrations and field officials are maintaining close watch over vulnerable areas, with teams monitoring water levels, roads and other critical infrastructure.
