New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit New Delhi on September 12 and 13 to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, China’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday. The visit will be his first trip to India in nearly seven years and comes as New Delhi and Beijing work to improve bilateral relations.

China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi will travel to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in the BRICS leaders’ meeting.

The announcement came after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jia-kun declined to confirm Xi’s travel plans during an earlier media briefing in Beijing.

Xi Jinping India Visit for BRICS Summit

Xi Jinping’s visit is significant for India-China relations, particularly as both countries continue efforts to stabilise ties following the deadly Galwan clashes of 2020.

India has consistently maintained that peace and tranquillity along the India-China border are essential for the continued development of bilateral relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping had a brief interaction during the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek. The two leaders are now expected to hold more detailed bilateral discussions on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

India-China Border Talks Continue

The BRICS meeting comes against the backdrop of continuing diplomatic and military-level engagement between India and China over their boundary issues.

Earlier this month, a senior military commander-level flag meeting was held along the Line of Actual Control. The meeting took place at Vacha on the Indian side in Arunachal Pradesh on September 6 and at Damai on the Chinese side on September 7.

The meetings followed understandings reached during discussions involving the Special Representatives of India and China and subsequent meetings under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination.

India-China Relations Show Signs of Engagement

On August 25, National Security Adviser and India’s Special Representative for the India-China Boundary Question Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister and Chinese Special Representative Wang Yi in Beijing for the 25th round of Special Representatives talks.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the two sides held comprehensive and candid discussions on the boundary issue as well as broader bilateral relations.

Both sides noted progress in implementing the consensus reached between Modi and Xi in Kazan in October 2024 and Tianjin in August 2025. They also welcomed the gradual restoration of people-to-people and cross-border exchanges.

These included the ongoing Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and border trade through three designated trading passes.
