New Delhi: WhatsApp claimed on Thursday that it has taken strong action in response to the growing threat of international scam calls in India, after the government took notice of the problem and announced that it would send a warning to the platform.

The platform, which has over 500 million users in the country, stated that it has increased its artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems to dramatically reduce such incidences.

“Our new enforcement will reduce the current calling rate by at least 50%, and we expect to be able to effectively control the current incidence.” “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our users have a safe experience,” a business spokeswoman said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, stated that the IT Ministry will send a notice to WhatsApp regarding spam calls from unknown international numbers, emphasising that social media platforms are responsible for ensuring user safety and trust.

Spam calls from overseas numbers, especially from African and Southeast Asian nations, overwhelmed WhatsApp users in India, as did bogus messages from unknown individuals.

The country codes displayed on the spam calls were Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Ethiopia, among others. The majority of these phone calls began with +251 (Ethiopia), +62 (Indonesia), +254 (Kenya), +84 (Vietnam), and other country codes.

According to WhatsApp, international fraud calls are a new method that unscrupulous actors have just employed. By leaving a missed call, they entice victims to phone or text back, only to be spammed.

“We will continue to provide several safety tools within WhatsApp, such as Block and Report, as well as consistently build user safety education and awareness, and proactively weed out bad actors from our platform.” However, bad actors develop new ways to defraud people,” a business spokeswoman explained.
