Covid Cases on the Rise Across India, JN.1 Variant Drives Infections

Published on

New Delhi, June 7, 2025: Covid-19 infections are once again on the rise in India, with active cases crossing the 5,000 mark. Health authorities are on alert as the highly transmissible JN.1 variant continues to spread rapidly across states.

Nationwide Covid Situation Worsens

According to the latest data, India has reported:

  • 5,755 active Covid cases
  • 5,484 recoveries
  • 391 new infections in the last 24 hours
  • 4 fatalities in the last 24 hours

Kerala continues to be the worst-hit state, recording 1,806 infections, followed by Gujarat with 717, and Delhi and West Bengal, each reporting over 600 cases.

Odisha Reports 38 Cases; Genome Sequencing Underway

Odisha has reported 38 positive cases out of 755 samples tested. The state health department has initiated genome sequencing of positive samples to identify any emerging variants. The Union Health Ministry has advised states to ensure the availability of oxygen supplies, ventilators, isolation beds, and medicines.

Mask Advisory Reinstated, School Guidelines in Karnataka

Amid rising cases, the public has been advised to wear masks, especially in crowded places. In Karnataka, the government has appealed to parents not to send children with cold, cough, or fever symptoms to school, aiming to curb the spread among vulnerable age groups.

JN.1 Variant Raises Concerns, But Not Panic

Medical experts say the JN.1 variant, which has been identified as the primary driver of the recent surge, spreads faster due to an additional mutation that helps it enter cells more easily and weaken immunity. However, doctors emphasize that JN.1 is not considered highly dangerous and urge people not to panic, but to stay cautious and follow health protocols.

Kerala Issues Hospital Guidelines, Mock Drills Ordered

With Kerala reporting the highest number of cases, the state health department has issued fresh guidelines to both public and private hospitals, urging them to conduct mock drills to test preparedness. Medical staff have also been directed to follow updated protocols for treatment and containment.

As the Covid-19 graph trends upward, health officials nationwide are working to contain the spread and minimize risk. Authorities are urging vigilance, masking, early testing, and avoidance of public gatherings—especially with the festival season underway.
