Odisha Announces ₹25 Lakh Ex-Gratia After Stampede Near Gundicha Temple in Puri

Published on

In a tragic incident during the annual Rath Yatra in Puri, three devotees, including two women, lost their lives and several others were injured in a stampede near the Sri Gundicha Temple at Saradhabali early this morning. The mishap occurred as massive crowds gathered for darshan of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra on their respective chariots.

The Odisha government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹25 lakh to the next of kin of each of the deceased. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and offered apologies to devotees for the unfortunate loss of lives. He assured that the state would take strict action against any negligence, affirming that such lapses in public safety would not be tolerated. In response to the tragedy, the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Puri have been transferred, and a thorough probe has been ordered.

Meanwhile, the chariots of the divine trio now stand before the Gundicha Temple, where the deities will reside for a nine-day sojourn. They are scheduled to enter the temple by this evening, marking a significant part of the Rath Yatra festivities. The Bahuda Yatra, or return journey, is slated for July 5.
