DRDO Hands Over Six Indigenous Radiation Monitoring Systems to Indian Navy

In a significant boost to India’s defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) handed over six advanced radiation surveillance and monitoring systems to the Indian Navy. These indigenously developed tools are aimed at strengthening India’s preparedness for nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) emergencies, especially in maritime and coastal operations.

What Was Handed Over?

The six products handed over during a ceremony at DRDO’s Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur include:

  1. Gamma Radiation Aerial Surveillance System (GRASS):
    • A compact gamma radiation sensor that can be mounted on drones.
    • Enables rapid aerial assessment of radiation in nuclear-affected zones.
  2. Environmental Surveillance Vehicle (ESV):
    • Developed by VRDE.
    • Detects nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) contamination.
    • Allows for real-time on-site analysis and decision-making in hazardous environments.
  3. Vehicle Radiological Contamination Monitoring System (VRCMS):
    • Tracks radioactive contamination on military and naval vehicles.
    • Assists in post-incident decontamination and safety audits.
  4. Underwater Gamma Radiation Monitoring System (UGRMS):
    • Measures gamma radiation beneath water surfaces.
    • Ideal for maritime safety, nuclear site security, and underwater emergency responses.
  5. Dirt Extractor and Cross Contamination Monitor (DECCOM):
    • Prevents spread of contaminants via footwear.
    • Useful in chemical, biological, or radioactive threat zones.
  6. Organ Radioactivity Detection System (ORDS):
    • Diagnoses radiation exposure in human organs.
    • Crucial for nuclear disaster response and medical triage.

The handover was officiated by DRDO Chairman and Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, who presented the systems to Rear Admiral Sriram Amur, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (SSP), at the special ceremony in Jodhpur.

These systems reflect India’s growing self-reliance in critical defence technologies under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and are expected to significantly improve the Indian Navy’s radiological detection, contamination control, and emergency response capabilities.
