Health Ministry Denies Reports on Warning Labels for Indian Snacks Like Samosa and Jalebi

Published on

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has dismissed media reports suggesting that it has ordered the issuance of warning labels on popular Indian snacks such as samosa, jalebi, and laddoo. In an official statement, the Ministry clarified that these reports are misleading, incorrect, and baseless.

Advisory Focused on Health Awareness at Workplaces

According to the Ministry, the confusion likely stems from a recent advisory issued to promote healthier food choices in workplaces. The advisory encourages the display of informative boards in areas such as lobbies, canteens, cafeterias, and meeting rooms, aimed at raising awareness about the risks of consuming excess sugar and hidden fats. The initiative is part of a broader effort to combat obesity, which is a growing public health concern in India.

No Directive for Vendor-Level Food Labeling

The Ministry clarified that the advisory does not mandate warning labels on food products, nor does it target specific Indian snacks or street food vendors. It emphasized that the advisory should not be interpreted as an attempt to regulate or criticize India’s diverse and culturally rich street food traditions.

Focus on Public Education, Not Regulation

The intent behind the advisory, the Ministry explained, is purely educational. It aims to provide daily health reminders to employees and promote nutritional awareness, not to impose regulations or bans on specific food items.
