National Sports Day 2025: India Pays Tribute to Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand

India today celebrates National Sports Day 2025, marking the birth anniversary of legendary field hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. Observed every year on August 29, the day underlines the importance of sports and fitness while keeping alive the extraordinary legacy of Dhyan Chand in Indian hockey. To mark the occasion, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya paid floral tribute to the hockey icon at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi this morning.

National Sports Day 2025 highlights Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy

Dr. Mandaviya will also lead the Fit India Pan-India Sports Movement, which will continue till August 31. Launched on the occasion of National Sports Day, the campaign pays homage to Major Dhyan Chand and aims to encourage sports culture across the nation. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced that the three-day fitness drive is being organized under the theme “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main”. Eminent athletes, public representatives, and citizens across India are participating in sporting events to spread the message of fitness and inclusivity.

Theme of National Sports Day 2025 promotes peace and inclusion

The official theme for this year is “Sport to Promote Peaceful and Inclusive Societies.” It reflects how sports have the power to bridge differences of caste, creed, and region, fostering unity and teamwork. The theme emphasizes that beyond competition, sports can be a force for harmony and collective progress.

PM Modi extends greetings on National Sports Day 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his wishes on the occasion through social media, paying homage to Major Dhyan Chand. He noted that Dhyan Chand’s achievements continue to inspire young athletes across generations. PM Modi also underlined how India’s sporting ecosystem has transformed with grassroots training programs and world-class facilities. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to strengthening infrastructure, supporting athletes, and positioning India as a global sporting powerhouse.

Leaders recall Dhyan Chand’s inspiring journey in hockey

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also remembered Major Dhyan Chand, calling his dedication and perseverance unmatched in the history of Indian sports.
