  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Odisha schools will reopen on June 18 as scheduled.
  • No decision has been taken to extend summer vacation.
  • District Collectors may modify school timings if heatwave conditions persist.

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha schools reopening schedule will remain unchanged, with educational institutions set to resume classes on June 18 after the summer vacation. The announcement was made by Nityananda Gond, putting an end to speculation about a possible extension due to the ongoing heatwave across the state.

The government clarified that schools will reopen as previously notified, although authorities will continue monitoring weather conditions.

No Extension of Summer Vacation

Speaking on the issue, the minister stated that there is currently no proposal to extend the vacation period beyond June 18.

The summer break had begun on May 12 after the state witnessed prolonged periods of extreme heat. With the southwest monsoon advancing into Odisha, officials expect weather conditions to gradually improve in many regions.

However, the government has left room for future review if temperatures become exceptionally severe again.

Student Safety Remains Top Priority

The state government has emphasized that the health and safety of students will remain a priority after schools reopen.

If high temperatures continue in specific districts, local administrations will be empowered to take appropriate measures based on ground conditions.

Possible measures include:

  • Morning school timings
  • Adjusted class schedules
  • Heat safety protocols
  • Localised administrative decisions

District Collectors have been authorised to respond according to the weather situation in their respective districts.

Schools Directed to Ensure Basic Facilities

To prepare for reopening amid lingering summer conditions, education authorities have issued instructions to District Education Officers.

Schools have been directed to ensure:

  • Availability of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution)
  • Adequate drinking water facilities
  • Basic heat-related safety measures

These steps are aimed at preventing dehydration and heat-related illnesses among students during the initial days of reopening.

Why the Decision Matters

The reopening decision balances educational continuity with public health concerns.

An extended closure could affect academic schedules and learning outcomes, while reopening during extreme weather requires adequate safeguards for students.

The second-order impact involves ensuring that schools remain operational without compromising student welfare, particularly in rural and heat-prone districts.

Monsoon May Bring Relief

Weather forecasts indicate that advancing monsoon conditions could gradually reduce temperatures across much of Odisha in the coming days.

If rainfall activity increases as expected, schools may reopen under relatively more comfortable weather conditions compared to the intense heat experienced during May and early June.

For now, the state government has maintained its original academic calendar, with students set to return to classrooms on June 18 while authorities remain prepared to respond to any weather-related challenges.
