PM Modi to Inaugurate Asia’s Widest Bridge: Aunta–Simaria 6-Lane Ganga Marvel in Bihar

Published on

Bihar is all set for a historic milestone in its infrastructure journey as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the Aunta–Simaria 6-lane bridge over the Ganga on August 22, 2025. Built with cutting-edge engineering, the 8.15 km-long structure is being hailed as Asia’s widest extra-dosed stay cable bridge, boasting a massive deck width of 39 metres. This new connectivity link will reshape travel, trade, and development across North and South Bihar.

Asia’s Widest Bridge to Transform Connectivity in Bihar

Constructed at a cost of ₹1,871 crore, the Aunta–Simaria bridge is designed with three-lane carriageways on both sides (13 metres each) and 1.5-metre-wide footpaths, ensuring smooth travel for vehicles and pedestrians alike. The bridge, built on the NH-31 corridor, connects Mokama in Patna district to Begusarai, offering an alternative to the old Rajendra Setu which has struggled with traffic and repair issues for decades.

By allowing heavy vehicles, which previously faced detours of nearly 100 km, the bridge is set to cut down transport time, fuel costs, and operational expenses, boosting both trade and local industries.

Smart Features and Engineering Excellence

The Aunta–Simaria project is more than just size—it’s a “smart bridge”. It comes equipped with:

  • CCTV cameras & telephones for safety
  • Digital display screens & roundabouts
  • Milky LED streetlights & plantations
  • Extra-dosed segmental structure with spans from 57 to 115 metres

This blend of smart infrastructure and advanced engineering reflects India’s growing global stature in modern construction.

Economic and Cultural Impact for Bihar

The bridge will play a pivotal role in regional connectivity, directly linking districts like Begusarai, Supaul, Madhubani, and Araria with Patna, Sheikhpura, Nawada, and Lakhisarai. This will open new avenues for industrial growth, local businesses, and trade expansion.

It also improves access to Simaria Dham, a prominent pilgrimage site and the birthplace of poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, merging Bihar’s cultural heritage with its modern growth story.

A Symbol of Bihar’s Future Growth

Laid as a foundation stone project by PM Modi in October 2017, the Aunta–Simaria bridge is now ready to redefine Bihar’s infrastructure landscape. As the Prime Minister, Governor, Chief Minister, and Union Ministers gather for its inauguration, this bridge will be remembered not only as Asia’s widest bridge but also as a symbol of resilience, progress, and connectivity.

For millions of residents, it means faster journeys, economic empowerment, and a stronger link to the rest of India—a true marvel of modern engineering and development.
