Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj Decorated for Tribal Festival Sohrai 2025

Sundargarh: The rural heartlands of Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj districts are brimming with excitement as preparations reach their peak for the grand celebration of the Sohrai festival 2025, a vibrant tribal event that holds immense cultural and agricultural significance.

Sohrai, one of the most revered tribal harvest festivals, bears a striking resemblance to Govardhan Puja. It is dedicated to the worship of cows and bullocks and symbolizes gratitude for their indispensable contribution to agriculture and rural livelihood. The festival marks a deep connection between humans, animals, and nature — expressing thanks to the sacred animals for their milk, help in transportation, and support in farming activities.

Sources revealed that the Sohrai festival is traditionally observed a day after Diwali, on Kartik Amavasya. However, due to confusion surrounding this year’s Diwali date, the festival is being celebrated on Wednesday instead.

Traditional Rituals and Preparations of the Sohrai Festival 2025

In several villages of Sundargarh, households are adorned with rangolis and decorated cowsheds as families gear up for the celebration.
Government employee Nandini Mundari shared that she travelled back to her ancestral home in Bisra block to participate in the rituals. “We cleaned and decorated our house with family members’ help. Our cows and bullocks are adorned with garlands, floral ornaments, and crowns woven from paddy strands,” she said.

During the morning rituals, cows and bullocks are not taken to the fields. Instead, they are fed within the cowshed and worshipped with devotion. Women and young girls wash the animals’ legs and hooves and extend the same ritual to the cattle of neighbouring families. The female head of the household performs the puja while observing a fast, symbolizing respect and gratitude.

Cultural Celebrations and Tribal Unity Across Odisha

As the day progresses, homes and cowsheds glow under the light of earthen lamps, creating a spiritual ambiance. Villagers gather for traditional folk dances, music, and storytelling that highlight tribal heritage and unity.

Manilal Kerketta, state president of the Raji Parha Sarna Prarthana Sabha, explained that Sohrai is celebrated by multiple tribal communities, including the Santhal, Mundari, Munda, Ho, Oram, Kisan, and Bhumij. Though the customs vary slightly from one community to another, the essence remains constant — to honour livestock for their role in sustaining human life.

Before beginning the livestock worship, devotees offer prayers to their presiding deity at the cattle shed, reaffirming the deep spiritual bond between humans and animals.

Sohrai Festival Expands Beyond Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj

In Mayurbhanj district, the Sohrai festival 2025 will be celebrated with equal zeal and grandeur. Tribes like Kudumi Mohanta, Santhal, Bhumij, Bathudi, Lodha, Kumhar, and Ganda will observe the festival over five days, each with distinctive customs, dances, and traditional feasts.

The festivities include communal meals prepared with freshly harvested grains, music performances, and rituals that strengthen community ties. The celebrations reflect the diversity and unity among Odisha’s tribal groups while showcasing their respect for nature and livestock.

Significance of Sohrai: Gratitude to Nature and Livestock

The Sohrai festival not only highlights the tribal community’s reverence for their livestock but also emphasizes sustainable living rooted in harmony with nature. It stands as a symbol of India’s agrarian traditions, where prosperity and spirituality coexist through rituals of gratitude and respect for all living beings.
