Eminent Flutist Deepak Sarma Passes Away at 57

Chennai: Internationally acclaimed flutist Deepak Sarma passed away at a hospital in Chennai around 6:15 am today. He was 57.

The distinguished artist had been battling a liver ailment and was receiving treatment in Guwahati before being shifted to Chennai on October 22 for advanced medical care.

Loss to Assam’s Cultural Fraternity

Deepak Sarma’s untimely demise has cast a pall of sorrow over Assam’s cultural community. Colleagues, students, and admirers have expressed deep grief, remembering him as a humble and devoted musician who carried the essence of Assamese culture to international audiences.

A Life Dedicated to Music

Born in 1968 in Panigaon, Nalbari district of Assam, Sarma rose to prominence through his soulful and intricate flute performances. Over the decades, he performed on prestigious stages across India and abroad, earning recognition for blending classical purity with creative improvisation.

Deepak Sarma’s contribution to Indian classical music and his role in popularising Assamese musical heritage will be remembered for generations.
