New Delhi: The Delhi hotel fire in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar has claimed at least 21 lives and left several others injured, making it one of the city’s deadliest fire tragedies in recent years. Many of the victims were reportedly foreign nationals, while some guests were relatives of patients undergoing treatment at a nearby private hospital.
The fire engulfed a five-storey building being used as a hotel, triggering a massive rescue operation involving firefighters, police personnel and disaster response teams.
Delhi Hotel Fire Triggers Massive Rescue Operation
According to officials, the blaze broke out on Wednesday morning and quickly spread through the building. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and evacuated dozens of occupants trapped inside the smoke-filled structure.
More than 40 people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals. However, 21 victims were declared dead, and authorities fear the toll could rise as several injured remain in critical condition.
The building reportedly housed a restaurant on the ground floor, while the upper floors operated as a bed-and-breakfast facility.

Investigators are examining whether adequate fire safety measures were in place at the building. Police sources indicated that the structure had only a single entry and exit point, a factor that may have complicated evacuation efforts during the emergency.

Eyewitnesses Describe Scenes of Panic
Witnesses recounted chaotic scenes as people attempted to escape the flames and thick smoke.
Several occupants reportedly smashed windows and jumped from upper floors in desperate attempts to save themselves. Some sustained serious injuries from the falls.
Local residents joined rescue efforts before emergency responders arrived. In one instance, a mattress seller reportedly spread mattresses on the ground to help cushion the impact for those forced to jump from the building.
Others provided first aid and CPR to injured victims while waiting for ambulances.
Investigation Focuses on Cause of Fire
Teams from the Delhi Fire Services, police and forensic experts have completed rescue operations and secured the site for investigation.
The building suffered extensive damage, with shattered glass, debris and burnt materials scattered around the area. Traffic was diverted while emergency operations continued throughout the day.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire. Investigators are expected to examine electrical systems, building safety standards and emergency preparedness measures as part of the probe.
As families mourn the victims, the tragedy is likely to intensify calls for stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations in hotels, guest houses and commercial establishments across the capital.
