RCB’s Unbeaten Streak Ends: Gujarat Titans Hand Bangalore a Reality Check in IPL 2025

Published on

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced their first setback of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, suffering an eight-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans on April 2. The match, held at Chinnaswamy Stadium, saw RCB stumble early as they lost three wickets during the powerplay, leaving them struggling at 38/3.

Head coach Andy Flower acknowledged the powerplay collapse as a turning point. “We lost wickets trying to be aggressive, and in T20 cricket, if you lose the powerplay, you’re in trouble,” he stated. However, crucial contributions from Jitesh Sharma (33), Liam Livingstone (54), and Tim David (32) helped RCB post a competitive 169/8 on a tricky pitch.

Was the Toss a Game-Changer?

Flower admitted that the toss played a significant role, with dew impacting the second innings. “The ball gripped off the seam early on, but the surface wasn’t the usual Chinnaswamy wicket where you expect quick runs. That said, Gujarat played better than us,” he remarked.

Siraj Shines Against Former Team

Former RCB pacer Mohammed Siraj delivered a match-winning spell, claiming 3/19, his best IPL figures at the venue. When asked if RCB regretted releasing Siraj, Flower dismissed the notion. “We all rate Siraj highly and wish him the best. But we believe we built a strong squad in the auction.”

RCB Still in Strong Position

Despite the loss, RCB remain third on the IPL 2025 points table, trailing only Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals on net run rate. With the tournament still in its early stages, Bangalore will look to bounce back stronger in their upcoming fixtures.
