BHUBANESWAR: The Mukhya Mantri Sadak Yojana received a major push after the Odisha Cabinet approved a ₹4,000 crore proposal to strengthen rural road infrastructure over the next five years. The investment, covering the period from 2026-27 to 2030-31, is aimed at improving all-weather connectivity in villages and accelerating infrastructure development across the state.
The decision is expected to enhance transportation, improve access to essential services and support economic growth in rural Odisha.
Mukhya Mantri Sadak Yojana to Add Over 4,600 Km of Rural Roads
Under the approved proposal, the Rural Development Department will construct approximately 4,607.21 kilometres of new roads across Odisha.
In addition to new construction, the government will complete 115 kilometres of road projects that are already under execution through the scheme.
The new investment is expected to improve connectivity for remote habitations, making travel safer and more reliable throughout the year.
Scheme Focuses on Expanding Rural Connectivity
The Mukhya Mantri Sadak Yojana, launched in 2014-15, was designed to provide all-weather road access to rural habitations that were not covered under other road development programmes.
Recognising the growing need to modernise existing infrastructure, the state government expanded the scheme in 2021-22 to include:
- Upgradation of Rural Development roads.
- Widening of existing rural roads.
- Improvement of roads transferred from the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department.
The expanded scope enables the government to improve both connectivity and road quality across rural areas.
Mukhya Mantri Sadak Yojana to Support Long-Term Rural Development
With the latest Cabinet approval, Odisha plans to accelerate the construction of new rural roads while ensuring that pending projects are completed within the five-year implementation period.
The government believes stronger rural connectivity will improve access to education, healthcare, markets and public services while supporting agricultural activities and local economic development. By expanding the Mukhya Mantri Sadak Yojana, the state aims to create a more efficient and resilient rural transport network that contributes to balanced regional growth.
