WB Teacher Recruitment Scam: Calcutta HC orders termination of service of 53 teachers

Kolkata: WB Teacher Recruitment Scam: The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered the termination of service of 53 primary school teachers in various government schools in West Bengal on charges of illegally obtaining jobs by using unfair means or against certain kickbacks.

Earlier this year, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay ordered the termination of services of 269 primary school teachers on the same grounds. However, these teachers approached the Supreme Court saying that the order was passed without hearing them.

The Supreme Court then directed the same single-judge bench to hear the arguments of these 269 primary school teachers. It also directed these teachers to file affidavits in this regard.

On Friday, 54 such teachers were to appear before Justice Gangopadhyay with their affidavits, of which 53 appeared. After reviewing these affidavits, Justice Gangopadhyay ordered the termination of the services of all these 53 teachers. He also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on one teacher who did not appear and said that he would get an opportunity to file his affidavit in the matter after paying the fine.

In WB Teacher Recruitment Scam, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said this is just the beginning. “Gradually, in the coming days, the court will order further such termination of services. Gradually, the number will increase to more than 25 thousand. Then they will all gather in Kolkata and then march to the Chief Minister’s residence in Kalighat and demand the refund of the money they paid for procuring the services,” he claimed.
