A tragic case of Mayurbhanj mob lynching minor has emerged from Odisha where a 14 year old boy was allegedly beaten to death by villagers over suspicion of stealing a goat. The incident occurred on February 2 in Herogoda village under Tiring police limits in Mayurbhanj district.
Police have arrested 11 people in connection with the incident and further investigation is underway.
Minor attacked after villagers accuse him of theft
The deceased has been identified as Sandip Bindhani, son of Rajkumar Bindhani from Bhutkabadi village under Rairangpur Rural police limits.
According to police, Sandip had been staying with his uncle in Herogoda village and was studying in Class IX at Baisinga Government High School.
On the afternoon of the incident, villagers allegedly caught Sandip and another minor, Rakesh Mohanta, accusing them of stealing a goat.
Villagers hold kangaroo court
Instead of informing police, locals reportedly gathered and held an informal village meeting, often described as a kangaroo court. During this gathering, both minors were allegedly assaulted by a mob.
Sources said the villagers also set their motorcycle on fire during the confrontation.
Both victims were critically injured before police reached the spot and rescued them.
Victim dies during treatment
The injured minors were initially admitted to a hospital in Jharadihi before being shifted to Rairangpur hospital. Sandip Bindhani later died during treatment.
Rakesh Mohanta was referred to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada for advanced treatment.
Police sources said his condition has now stabilised and he has been discharged.
Police arrest 11 accused
According to Mayurbhanj police officials, Sandip’s father lodged a complaint at Tiring Police Station following the incident.
Sub Divisional Police Officer Birendra Senapati confirmed that 11 people from Indokholi, Herogoda, Gidhighati and Kulgi villages have been arrested so far.
Police registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, including sections related to unlawful assembly, assault and murder.
Officials said more arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
Growing concern over mob violence
The incident has raised concerns about vigilante justice and mob violence in rural areas where disputes sometimes escalate without legal intervention.
Authorities have urged residents to report suspected crimes to the police rather than taking matters into their own hands.
