President Vladimir Putin thanks Trump, PM Modi for noble cause to resolve Russia Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among other world leaders, for their “noble mission” to end the conflict in his initial remarks on the United States’ 30-day ceasefire proposal for Ukraine. Putin expressed gratitude to all the leaders for their work toward the goal during a joint press briefing with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

“As for Ukraine’s readiness for a ceasefire, I will tell you how I view it, of course. But I would like to start by thanking the President of the United States, Mr Trump, for paying so much attention to the Ukraine settlement. We all have enough of our own domestic affairs to attend to,” Putin told reporters.

“However, a number of state leaders are tackling this issue and devoting a significant amount of their time to it, including the president of the People’s Republic of China, the prime minister of India, the presidents of Brazil and South Africa. Since the goal of this activity is to accomplish a noble goal—the goal of putting an end to hostilities and fatalities—we are thankful to each and every one of them for that,” he added.

PM Modi restated India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict during his meeting with Trump at the White House last month, stating that the nation stands on the “side of peace” rather than “neutral.”

“India is not neutral. India is on the side of peace. This is not an era of war. A solution can’t be found on the battlefield, We support all peace initiatives and support Trump’s initiative to end the war.” PM Modi said.

PM Modi has often addressed Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy since the conflict started in February 2022, reaffirming India’s commitment to a diplomatic and dialogue-based peaceful settlement of the conflict. During the 22nd India-Russia bilateral in July of last year, the Indian Prime Minister met Putin in Moscow. In August, he also visited Ukraine. On both occasions, he declared that India was prepared to actively contribute to the pursuit of peace and development.

Putin, meantime, accepted the US’s proposal for a ceasefire but insisted that any deal must address the underlying causes of the conflict and imposed a number of explanations and conditions.

Following negotiations between Washington and Kyiv in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine has agreed to the proposed truce. Putin claimed that being “under pressure from the US” was the reason behind the decision.

Trump expressed his hope that Russia would do the “right thing” after Putin’s remarks regarding the stipulations of the ceasefire agreement. The comments, however, infuriated Zelenskyy, who asserted that Putin was planning to reject the idea but was afraid to inform Trump of this.
