Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’ Al-Waleed bin Khaled Dies After 20 Years in Coma at Age 36

Published on

Riyadh: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled Al-Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince”, has passed away at the age of 36 after spending two decades in a coma following a tragic car crash. His death was confirmed by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, in a heartfelt post on social media platform X.

A Life Changed by Tragedy

In 2005, at just 15 years old, Prince Al-Waleed was studying at a military college in the UK when he was involved in a high-speed accident in London. The crash caused a brain haemorrhage and internal bleeding, leaving him in a persistent coma. He was eventually moved to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained on life support for the next 20 years.

A Father’s Unwavering Faith

Despite medical prognoses, Prince Khaled steadfastly refused to withdraw life support, holding out hope that his son might one day awaken.

“With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree… we mourn our beloved son,” he wrote, quoting a verse from the Quran:
“O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], and enter among My servants and enter My Paradise.”

A Symbol of Hope and Resilience

Over the years, Prince Al-Waleed’s condition drew widespread public interest and became a symbol of faith, perseverance, and the powerful bond between parent and child across the Arab world.

In 2019, a brief video circulated online showing slight movement in his head and arm, sparking hopes of recovery. However, no substantial progress followed. Earlier in 2024, false reports claimed the prince had awoken from his coma, which the royal family quickly refuted.

An Outpouring of Grief

News of Prince Al-Waleed’s passing triggered an emotional response on social media, with the hashtag #SleepingPrince trending throughout Saudi Arabia and the region.

“May Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled rest in peace,” wrote one user.
“Your time on earth was a blessing to your family and the world,” said another.

The prince’s story, though marked by tragedy, remains a poignant reminder of unbreakable love, hope against all odds, and the enduring human spirit.
