Virar: The tragedy in Virar deepened on Thursday as the death toll from the Virar building collapse rose to 17, with two more bodies pulled out from under the debris by rescue teams. The incident took place at Ramabai Apartment in Narangi, Virar (East), which partially collapsed late Tuesday night. The apartment, built in 2011 with nearly 50 flats, has now turned into rubble, leaving families devastated.
The deceased include young children, couples, and elderly residents. The victims were identified as Omkar Jovil, 25; his wife Arohi Jovil, 24; their one-year-old daughter Uttkarsha; Laxman Kisku Singh, 26; Dinesh Prakash Sakpal, 43; Parvati Sakpal, 60; Sachin Nivadkar, 40; his wife Supriya, 38; their son Arnav, 11; Dipesh Soni, 41; Harish Singh Bist, 34; Sonali Rupesh Tejam, 41; Deepak Singh Bohra, 25; Kashish Pawan Saheni, 35; Subhangi Pawan Saheni, 40; Govind Singh Rawat, 28; and Rohini Chavan, 52.
Virar Building Collapse Leaves Families Shattered
The Jovil family’s tragedy has shaken the community as their daughter Uttkarsha, who had just celebrated her first birthday hours before the collapse, succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Her mother Arohi died on the spot, while her father Omkar’s body was later recovered. This personal loss highlighted the immense scale of grief the Virar building collapse has brought upon residents.
Rescue Operations Led by NDRF and Local Authorities
Teams from the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation’s fire brigade, assisted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been engaged in round-the-clock rescue operations for over 48 hours. So far, 9 people have been rescued alive and shifted to hospitals. Officials have confirmed that operations are in their final stages, with debris clearance continuing.
Injured Survivors Receiving Medical Treatment
Those injured in the collapse include Prabhakar Shinde (57), his wife Pramila (50), their daughter Prerna (20), Pradeep Kadam (40), Jaishree Kadam (33), Mitali Parmar (28), Sanjoy Singh (24), Manthan Shinde (19), and Vishakha Jovil (24). They are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Vasai-Virar, with doctors monitoring their recovery closely.
Government Response and Compensation for Victims
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his deep condolences and paid tribute to the victims. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) announced financial aid of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the deceased. “The government stands firmly with the families affected by this tragedy,” the CMO statement read.
