- Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi has written to West Bengal’s leadership over the naming of the Digha Jagannath Temple.
- He requested the removal of the word “Dham” from the temple’s official nomenclature.
- The issue has sparked debate among devotees, scholars and cultural organisations.
BHUBANESWAR: The Jagannath Dham controversy has resurfaced after Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi formally requested the West Bengal government to remove the word “Dham” from the official name of the Jagannath temple in Digha.
In his communication, Majhi stressed that the term “Jagannath Dham” carries deep spiritual, historical and cultural significance and is intrinsically associated with the historic Jagannath Temple in Puri.
Odisha Raises Concerns Over Temple Nomenclature
The Odisha Chief Minister urged the West Bengal government to consider adopting an alternative name such as “Shri Jagannath Temple, Digha” while dropping the suffix “Dham.”
According to Majhi, such a move would respect the sentiments of millions of Jagannath devotees and help preserve the unique identity of Puri’s revered shrine.
He also expressed confidence that the matter could be resolved amicably while strengthening cultural ties and goodwill between Odisha and West Bengal.
Why the Jagannath Dham Controversy Matters
For many devotees and religious scholars, the term “Jagannath Dham” is not merely a name but a sacred designation linked to Puri’s centuries-old temple tradition.
The Puri temple is widely regarded as one of Hinduism’s four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites and holds immense religious importance across India and beyond.
Critics of the Digha naming argue that using the same designation for another temple could create confusion among devotees and dilute the historical identity associated with Puri.
The second-order effect extends beyond religion. The issue touches upon cultural heritage preservation, regional identity and the management of sacred traditions in modern India.
Previous Objections and Public Debate
This is not the first time Odisha has raised concerns regarding the Digha temple’s naming.
A similar appeal was made to former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after promotional material reportedly referred to the shrine as “Jagannath Dham.”
At the time, Banerjee defended the project and questioned objections to the construction of a Jagannath temple in West Bengal.
The controversy later expanded to include debates over idol-making traditions and allegations concerning the use of sacred neem wood, further intensifying public sentiment.
Heritage Protection Efforts Continue
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration has also explored legal measures to protect traditional identifiers associated with the Puri shrine.
Among the names being considered for protection are:
- Jagannath Dham
- Purushottam Dham
- Neelachal Dham
Temple authorities and cultural groups believe these titles are inseparable from Puri’s historic and religious legacy.
Awaiting West Bengal’s Response
The latest letter marks a renewed attempt by Odisha to resolve the issue through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Whether West Bengal agrees to modify the nomenclature remains to be seen, but the debate highlights the enduring emotional and spiritual connection millions of devotees share with Puri’s Jagannath tradition and its unique place in India’s cultural heritage.
