New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended greetings to citizens on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, praying for happiness, brotherhood and good health across society.

“Eid ul-Adha greetings! May this occasion deepen the spirit of brotherhood and happiness in our society. Praying for everyone’s success and good health.”

PM Modi Eid al-Adha Greetings Amid Nationwide Celebrations

Eid al-Adha, popularly known as Bakrid in India, was celebrated across the country with religious devotion and festive enthusiasm.

Thousands of worshippers gathered at mosques and Eidgahs from early morning to offer special prayers marking one of the most significant festivals in Islam.

Large congregations were witnessed in several cities as people dressed in traditional attire exchanged greetings and participated in community celebrations.

The second-order effect of nationwide religious celebrations often strengthens social cohesion and communal harmony, especially when public participation and peaceful observance remain high across regions.

Festival Symbolises Sacrifice and Compassion

Worshippers said the festival carries messages of:

  • Brotherhood
  • Compassion
  • Peaceful coexistence
  • Charity and sacrifice

Eid al-Adha commemorates the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.

The festival symbolises:

  • Faith and obedience
  • Gratitude
  • Forgiveness
  • Charity toward the underprivileged

Families across the country celebrated the occasion with prayers, festive meals and acts of kindness.

Security Tightened Across Cities

Authorities made elaborate security arrangements in several parts of India to ensure peaceful celebrations and maintain law and order during the festival.

Police deployments and crowd management measures were intensified around:

  • Mosques
  • Eidgahs
  • Major marketplaces
  • Public gathering points

Officials said celebrations remained largely peaceful across the country.

Bakrid Date Varied in Some Regions

While most states observed Bakrid on Thursday, some regions including parts of Jammu and Kashmir celebrated the festival a day earlier.

Like other Islamic festivals, the date of Eid al-Adha depends on crescent moon sighting.

Religious authorities in several regions had confirmed that the Dhul-Hijjah crescent moon was not sighted on the expected evening, resulting in the festival being observed on May 28 in most parts of India this year.
