Odisha Bandh: All Fuel Stations to Remain Closed on July 17 Amid Security Concerns

Published on

Bhubaneswar: In view of the statewide Odisha Bandh on July 17, called by the Congress party to protest the tragic death of Soumyashree Bisi, all petrol pumps across Odisha will remain closed from 6 AM to 6 PM on Wednesday.

The decision has been taken amid security concerns, as widespread protests and shutdowns are expected across the state.

3,000+ Fuel Stations to Remain Shut

Sasanka Sekhar Sahoo, President of the Odisha Petrol Dealers’ Association, confirmed that over 3,000 fuel outlets and three depots will suspend operations during the bandh.

“Petrol pumps will stay closed for 12 hours due to safety concerns. Operations will resume once adequate security is assured,” Sahoo said.

The estimated financial loss from the shutdown is expected to be around ₹100 crore.

The bandh is in response to the death of Soumyashree Bisi, a student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, who died after setting herself ablaze allegedly due to sexual harassment and administrative inaction.

Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das stated that the bandh has support from eight opposition parties, including Left outfits, and aims to demand justice and accountability.
